There are over 800 dog breeds recognized by kennel clubs thru out the world. Since most dog breeds came from mixed-breed populations, pure breed has meaning only with respect to number of generations. Dogs outside the U.S. and Western Europe belong to none of the various recognized dog breeds. A few basic breed types have evolved over the past 10,000 plus years.
